Just moved to China and have a couple questions(self.torrents)

submitted3 years agobykreak210

Im pretty involved in a few trackers, but have only learned as much about them and torrenting as I needed to participate. Here are a few questions I was hoping this community could help answer for me.

Does China have some strict torrenting laws? Various sites suggest different things. Could I use piratebay, for example, or need I use some Chinese torrenting site?

I can access most torrent sites using Chinese internet, but I also have a VPN (Pandapow). Is it best to torrent through the Chinese internet, the VPN, or should I use some alternative method altogether?

Will Pandapow care that I torrent through their IPs? Is that a bad thing to do?

With the various trackers, could I use my Chinese IP for them? Will that mess something up or compromise anything? If it is compromising, could I use the VPN for this (assuming I keep a static IP)?

Thanks for anyone willing to hold my hand through this. And feel free to pretend Im a child when explaining…

Hey, so my experience in china is limited to 6 weeks for an exchange program last summer but I do have a few tips. Torrenting is freaking rampant in china, my host brother had fast and the furious 6 before it was even released. The Chinese government from what I heard is starting to try harder to catch torrent era and is having mild success. I would defiantly suggest only browsing with a VPN and not a Chinese central run one. They are more likely to hand over your information if you are ever caught. Second reason to use a VPN is the great golden wall aka the Internet censorship. I would suggest PIA as a VPN but the choice is up to you. Going with the sensor ship theme, the pirate bay is quite well blocked, of course this is moderately easy to get around ie. proxy, VPN, or other methods. If you are living with a host family or with someone your friends with ask them before torrenting because they will also get in trouble if you are caught. From my personal experience torrenting there is not much different from torrenting from in the US, I am not sure where you are from so idk if that makes much sense but I hope my little tidbit of info helps you out, good luck in china, its a awesome place and you will learn a lot!

Cool, thanks for the response. Im using Pandapow for my VPN, but dont they have access to what Im browsing. In other words, wont they know that Im using their VPN to torrent?

If they keep logs, which most vpns do, then yes. The VPN service doesnt want to get you in trouble however, its when the government or fcc or whatever asks for those logs and they turn them over youre in trouble

From what I can see, Pandapow is only about 5-10% cheaper than Seedhost, which is an inexpensive seedbox plus a free VPN. Going that route would be better for torrenting if youre on good private trackers or want to be.

If you are not uploading torrents and just seeding them you wont get caught. And if your uploads are popular and its porn. I suggest dont upload them without protection.

VPN in China is necessary based on that we have Great Firewall. You need use VPN for browsing Facebook ,twitter,YouTube, ect.

Not so many trackers ban Chinas ip. If you not sure for that. Go to their irc channel for help.

Rent a seedbox is cheaper than upgrade you bandwidth in China. ISPs in China sucks. The fees are high and the speed sucks.
